Spiny-tailed Monitor (Varanus acanthurus)

These beautiful monitors are relatively new additions to our breeding efforts, and we are looking forward to the opportunity of producing many captive-bred monitors.

Varanus acanthurus spp. grow to little more than 350mm in total length, and live in arid rocky habitats across portions of northern Australia. They make their homes in deep rock crevices, using their broad spiny tails as anchors - if threatened they lodge themselves inside their crevices by inflating their bodies with air and pressing themselves into the rock fissures.
